Here are the Top 20 most watched sports events on TV in Ireland in 2014

It was all about Schmidt for Irish viewers in 2014

Six Nations glory won the year, Germany’s World Cup final was second, with the All-Ireland Football final down in third

When this list was published last year, it was a clean sweep for the GAA as the All Ireland Football final, the All-Ireland hurling final and the All-Ireland football semi final (between Dublin and Kerry) took the top three slots.

But 2014 saw the GAA slip behind the other two big sports in Ireland when it came to TV viewing figures, published by RTE today. The most watched sporting event of 2014 was Ireland’s Six Nations clincher over France in March, which had 891,000 viewers.

Second, and no surprise really, was the World Cup final between Germany and Argentina with 859,000. The first GAA event to appear was the football final between Kerry and Donegal, which came third with 831,000 viewers.

The drawn hurling final, between Tipp and Kilkenny was fourth and Ireland’s loss to England in the Six Nations was fifth.
