Australian Open Day 2: Thank goodness for Gael Monfils

On a hopelessly uneventful day in Melbourne, all the main players in action advanced to the second round.

That includes men's No 1 Novak Djokovic, defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka and fifth seed Kei Nishikori, while on the women's side the Williams sisters, Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki easily made it through. Thank goodness then, for Gael Monfils, the Frenchman who makes a habit of the sublime. The 17th seed came from two sets down to beat compatriot Lucas Pouille, with this stunning point the highlight of his comeback.
