"I couldn't confirm that for you but I'll take it."
That's what Mayo's Shairoze Akram had to say when RTÉ's Darragh Maloney told him that he was the first Pakistan-born player to win an All-Ireland.
Akram, born in Haroonabad, Pakistan, featured prominently as Mayo's U-21s trumped Cork 5-7 to 1-14 in the final to secure the county's first EirGrid All-Ireland U21 football championship in a decade.
The Ballaghaderreen clubman epitomised the dogged, pressurising game of Mayo throughout the game in Ennis and it is believed that Akram really is the first Pakistan-born player to claim an All-Ireland medal.
And the history made by Akram, who also featured in the Mayo minor team that reached an All-Ireland semi-final in 2014, didn't go unnoticed after the game.

The Dubs boss got into a physical altercation with Galway’s S&C coach Cian Breathnach McGinn, with both men sent to the stands by referee Fergal Kelly. Brennan acknowledged the decision after the game and said: “Yeah look, myself and the […]
RIP. Tributes have been pouring in from the world of Irish sport, following the passing of broadcasting great Michael Lyster. There were touching scenes at Galway’s clash with Dublin yesterday, while both the Taoiseach and Tánaiste released statements. The legendary RTÉ Marty broadcaster Marty Morrissey also spoke about his former colleague, with a glowing tribute […]
Brutal. Mayo boss Andy Moran has hit back at Joe Brolly, after the pundit criticised his selection against Kerry earlier this month. Mayo were hammered 2-29 to 0-19 that day, with Brolly writing in his column that ex-player Moran was too reliant on his ‘old friends’ group’, referencing players such as Aidan O’Shea, Cillian O’Connor, […]
