Dessie Farrell puts to bed the rumours that Con O'Callaghan wouldn't be returning to the Dublin football panel this year. O’Callaghan has been injured since a challenge game earlier in the year and his absence has caused huge speculation around his future with the team. There had been reports circulating that he might be joining the county's hurling team instead, as it is well known that he is as talented with the wee ball as he is with the big one. Having already won everything there is to win in football, several times over, it wouldn't have been the craziest thing to believe that the Cuala native was interested in a new challenge. Combine this with the fact that Dublin's slide from their all-conquering squad in recent years is becoming more and more apparent, least because they have just been relegated to Division Two for the first time in decades. However, after the game against Monaghan, which effectively put the nail in their Division One coffin, Dessie Farrell was pressed on whether or not the three time All-Star would return. “He will, for sure," was the short but powerful answer the Dublin manager gave, because it was a small ray of light for Dublin fans who had to endure a difficult day. Farrell continued to explain that relegation wasn't even the biggest disappointment following the Monaghan game.

“Our disappointment is based around the inconsistency of the performance. After having two decent performances back-to-back there is still some work to do for sure.

"We thought we were at a decent enough trajectory at that point. In the second half we were better; we were flat enough in the first half. “It is more disappointing, I think, in terms of the quality of the performance. Obviously, we are looking towards the summer at this point.”
