Premier League records highest ever number of positive Covid-19 cases

Premier League clubs have recorded a record-high number of Covid-19 cases in the latest round of testing. Between Monday, December 20 and Sunday, December 2, over 15,000 Covid-19 tests were administered, comprising daily lateral flow tests and twice-weekly PCR tests for both players and staff. There were 103 positive cases, the highest number recorded since clubs began testing at the start of the pandemic in the spring of 2020. "The safety of everyone is a priority and the Premier League is taking all precautionary steps in response to the impact of the Omicron variant," the league said in a statement. This is an increase of 13 after 90 positive cases were detected in the previous round of testing. The Omicron variant of Coronavirus has already seen 15 top-flight games postponed in England, including three on St Stephen's Day. But the league decided to continue without imposing a circuit-breaker, with little time available to further delay an already congested fixture schedule.
