First, Ireland would face South Korea on 11 June in Guadalajara. The game would start at 3am Irish time. It would be a difficult hour for supporters, but it would mark the beginning of their World Cup journey.
Next, Ireland would meet South Africa on 18 June in Atlanta. This match would begin at 5pm Irish time, making it the most accessible fixture of the three.
Finally, Ireland would play Mexico on 24 June in Mexico City. This game would kick off at 2am Irish time, creating another late-night test for fans.
Heimir Hallgrimsson reacted to the draw with enthusiasm. He also stressed that Ireland must first qualify.
“I'm excited. I know we're not in it yet, but I'm excited. We were hoping to be in the US, because the Irish diaspora is in the US.”
He spoke about his experience in Mexico as well.
“I've played a couple of occasions in Mexico, it's a big stadium. So hopefully we will, if we get there, we will have a lot of Irish fans coming.”
Hallgrimsson also believes the group is balanced.
“I think it's a quite equal group in a way that it's not like a Brazil or an Argentina that normally are favourites in the group… It's a beatable group if we get ourselves in it. It's a group that we would fancy qualifying from.”
Ireland must first beat the Czech Republic. After that, they would face Denmark or North Macedonia. Hallgrimsson remains confident.
“I am confident… we are going to qualify… We're going to prepare to be here the best way we can.”
The schedule is now set. Ireland just need to get there.
