Great news for Ireland and Joe Schmidt

The outhalf has been out with concussion since the Autumn internationals

Ireland’s Six Nations opener against Italy is 30 days from today and this morning’s Irish Times brings great news about Ireland’s most important player’s prospects for the tournament.

Gerry Thornley reports that Johnny Sexton is making ‘good progress’ at Racing Metro in his recovery from concussion and that he is on track to be ready to face France, Ireland’s second game of this year’s competition, on February 14.

Sexton hasn’t played for club or country since a clash of heads with Rob Kearney when playing Australia in November. It was the fourth concussion the outhalf had endured in 12 months resulting in doctors at his club advising that Sexton take a 12-week break from the game.

Thornley reports that Sexton should be cleared for full contact work again the week before the France game. As it stands he is taking part in all other aspects of training such as weights and skill drills.

The news means Joe Schmidt will have to make a choice at No 10 for the Italy game but the return of his most trusted on-field general for the remainder of the campaign would be a huge boost to Ireland’s hopes.
