One of the most iconic stadiums in Britain could host Munster’s potential semi-final

The Fields of Athenry wouldn't be unfamiliar at this ground

Now this would be something else.

After Munster secured their home quarter-final for this season’s Champions Cup after a hard-fought 22-10 win over Racing 92, fans began to dream of what could lie ahead over the coming months.

Munster’s second seeding left them with a match-up against European rugby aristocrats, Toulouse. The four-time European champions will come to Thomond Park with bad memories after the French side suffered a 47-23 thrashing at the same stage in 2014.

Munster will be confident of securing a win, especially with the vocal backing of a full Thomond Park.

As a result fans have been looking forward to potential semi-final match-ups where Munster could either face Saracens or familiar foes, Glasgow Warriors.

If Glasgow were to pull off a shock win at Allianz Park then they would have home advantage for their semi-final tie. As Scotstoun doesn’t have the capacity to fulfill EPCR’s regulations surrounding capacity requirements for semi-finals, Glasgow will have to find an alternative venue.

Obviously, Edinburgh’s Murrayfield would be an obvious choice for the Warriors but there are also a large number of football stadiums in Glasgow which could also host the match. A club spokesperson for Glasgow told The Irish Daily Star that no option has been ruled out.

“We have nothing in place yet but in the event we qualify for the last four, we are aware we can’t use Scotstoun so we will be looking at options.

“We would have the option of Murrayfield in Edinburgh but there are also three big grounds in Glasgow – Parkhead (Celtic Park), Hampden and Ibrox. Right now, we are not ruling out playing in one of those.”

Munster fans would probably prefer to have a home semi-final against Saracens rather than playing the Warriors again but you would imagine the Red Army would be their usual resourceful selves and bring a sizable contingent to Glasgow or Edinburgh.
