O’Mahony: Munster were bullied by Clermont

Munster suffered their first ever defeat to a French side in Thomond Park tonight

Peter O’Mahony was very, very cranky after Munster’s loss to Clermont in the Champions Cup tonight and it’s not a surprise.

Anthony Foley’s side lost out to the French top 14 outfit by 16-9 in what, by Munster standards, was a poor performance at a packed Thomond Park.

And the Munster captain admitted afterwards that the players will have to improve for next week’s return game in France:

‘I thought we could have done a lot of the things we did a little better,’ said O’Mahony. ‘We spoke at half time and it’s the beauty of this competition with the back-to-backs that we just have to put it right next week.’

When O’Mahony was asked in what areas he felt Munster might need to improve the Corkman was typically honest in his assessment

‘I think its very simple. We have to dominate physically. We were bullied at times which isn’t something that normally happens at home. We have eight days to recover and train hard and put ourselves in the best position possible to do a job on Saturday.’

Munster now face two of their last three games away from home and O’Mahony has promised that the team will raise their game for a daunting trip to Europe next week:

‘We let ourselves down and our supporters and we have to put that right next week. That’s the bottom line.’

We imagine training all week in Limerick could be pretty bruising if previous accounts of what the atmosphere inside the Munster camp is like after defeats in Thomond.

Clermont have been warned.
