The lad just wants to play rugby.

Joey Carbery’s remarkable rise in the rugby world is something that everyone can appreciate.

The 21-year-old was relatively unknown at the start of last season but fast forward to present day and he is now regarded as one of the hottest prospects in Irish rugby and was part of the team that beat New Zealand in Chicago.

The New Zealand born player would be regarded as a fly half but has impressed in full back for Leinster during his breakthrough season and is just happy to be playing.

Speaking at Canterbury’s official launch of the new kit for the Irish rugby team Carbery admitted that he’s just happy to help his team where he can.

“My favourite position to play in would be 10, but if I’m on the pitch and I’d have to play prop I’d be happy enough to get on,” he told reporters.

“It’s more so what the team needs from me, my favourite position is 10 but I’m never complaining if I’m on the pitch,” he concluded.

There’s a lesson to be learnt in all of this, although there is little doubting that Carbery would love to be starting at fly half week in and week out he is more focused on getting as many minutes under his belt as possible and is just simply delighted to be on the pitch.

Coming into the Ireland squad at such a young age is undoubtedly a daunting experience to even the most battle hardened youngsters and the physicality of international rugby would require some adjustment and Carbery admits that progress has been slow in the gym but everything is going in the right direction coming into the new season.

“I’ve tried to (bulk up) anyway, not going that well,” he joked.

“I’ve put on a few kilograms over the last few weeks just with the ankle injury and just being in the gym so hopefully that will be a positive coming into the season and it’s pretty exciting.

“It’s tough when you’re doing tough Tuesdays with (Stuart Lancaster) but you’ve just got to keep training but Leinster are adequate for that muscle mass so there’s always time to keep it motivated.” Carbery remarked.

Canterbury, the official kit supplier to the Ireland Rugby team, has unveiled their new jersey for the 2017/18 season. The kit is available to buy now from Canterbury.com and sports retailers nationwide.
