Irish Rugby release details of 2016 Tour to South Africa

11 years in the making

Patrick McCarry

No midweek games for the men in green.

The IRFU have released the dates and venues for their three-Test tour of South Africa next summer.

Joe Schmidt’s men will play on consecutive Saturdays in June against a Springbok side that finished as bronze medallists in the recent World Cup.

The first match against the Springboks will take place in Cape Town on June 11 with the follow-up fixtures taking place in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth. Sadly, Ireland are not following the Welsh lead with a midweek game against club or Super Rugby opposition.

Ireland have never won a Test match in South Africa and last toured there in 2004 when the hosts won the Series 2-0.

The last six Test matches have seen Ireland finish on the winning side on four occasions, the latest being the 29-15 win at the Aviva Stadium last season.
