The jury's out

The gear that will be worn by fighters at UFC 205 are going to be… different.

It seems that whenever there is a significant UFC card coming up, Reebok will be at hand to produce a new range of fight kits for the event.

At UFC 200, we saw the introduction of colour to the normally white and black apparel made by the promotion’s official outfitting partner, but the sportswear behemoths are going a bit bolder for the UFC’s first ever New York-based event on November 12.

The card will be a landmark one for the sport as it will mark the promotion’s first ever event in the state after the bill to legalise professional MMA was finally passed in early 2016. As the UFC recently announced, fighters competing on the card will don unique weigh-in and walkout gear, including hats, t-shirts, hoodies and shorts, all of which will be bearing designs inspired by the Big Apple.

Marc Leonardo, Design Director at Reebok Combat, explained that they’ve gone back to basics with the new bold designs (see below), as there is an absence of colour. However, the striking imagery emblazoned on the pieces will give fans a feel of the city.

“The NYC-inspired UFC Fight Kit embodies the famous fight culture of the city. We used a simple but stark color palette, incorporating black, white and silver. The iconography was raw and gritty – which evokes a mood that mirrors the community around New York City that is enamored with combat sports.”

We know what you’re thinking? What’s up with the leather jacket? Thankfully, he addressed that too.

“The leather jacket and partnership with Schott N.Y.C was an exciting build to the pack, giving it a fusion of grit and style that NYC is synonymous for.”
