Many thought we may never see the feat again, but American Pharoah ended a 37-year wait for a Triple Crown winner with victory in the Belmont Stakes in New York last night.
The horse led from the off and stretched away down the home straight to finish off a remarkable five-week stint that also included victories at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.
American Pharoah, trained by Bob Baffert, is the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to win the holy grail of US horse racing, avoiding becoming the 13th horse to have won the opening two legs of the race only to fall at the final hurdle.
