Irish sports fans are being massively cheered by Shane Lowry’s US Open charge

Rallying the nation's spirits

Patrick McCarry

Four shots clear going into the final round at the US Open, Shane Lowry has given us reason to believe again.

Our football and rugby teams may have fallen flat this weekend but one affable Offlay man is lifting our chin off the floor.

When Lowry teed off, in Pittsburgh, at 7am this morning he was two shots clear of Andrew Landry. He told reporters, last night, that he lived for the limelight and he backed up those words.

By the time he had finished off the four holes of his third round, Lowry was on -7. His round of 65 was the third best ever carded on the notoriously tough Oakmont course. The closest men to him were Americans Landry and Dustin Johnson.

The final round will take place from 3:30pm this afternoon [8:30pm Irish time] with Lowry on the brink of something truly special.

The online reaction to Lowry’s charge sum up the mood of a hopeful nation:

We need you Shane!
