The US Open 2025: Preview

Paddy Morgan

The US Open is almost here.

It’s time for mens golf’s third major of 2025 – the 125th US Open – which gets underway today and will run until Sunday June 15th .

Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania will host its 10th US Open this week, a first since 2016 where Dustin Johnson achieved victory.

A field of 156 talented golfers is assembled for this week’s event and another opportunity to see defending champion Bryson DeChambeau as 14 LIV Tour members will be in attendance.

This tournament is run by USGA which includes a massive prize money of $21.5 million on offer with the winner receiving $4.3 million.

Sport fans in Ireland will be able to watch all four days exclusively on Sky Sports Golf beginning today at 12:30PM.

The 2025 US Open will be Rory McIlroy’s 17th appearance and his 2016 Oakmont performance was an unfortunate missed halfway cut.

McIlroy’s US Open record also includes winning 2011 edition with a record score and finishing runner-up in both 2023 & 2024.

The first four months of 2025 proved to be incredibly successful for McIlroy as he achieved victories at Pebble Beach, TPC Sawgrass and created history by becoming the sixth golfer to win all four majors in Augusta National.

The Northern Irishman hasn’t been the same since winning at Augusta especially with skipping two PGA Tour Signature Events and his best recent finish is a tied seventh in Truist Championship.

If McIlroy can hit fairways and his wedge game is as good as it was in Augusta then he will have a chance but we’re not sure if five days is enough to go from missing RBC Canadian Open halfway cut to contending at Oakmont.

Shane Lowry will be participating in his 16th US Open and his best finish is a joint runner-up in 2016. Lowry is currently 12th on World Golf Rankings and a consistent 2025 PGA Tour season includes two runner-up finishes.

The strength of Lowry’s game is incredible iron play as he is currently ranked second in PGA Tour Strokes Gained Approach the Greens.

It’s only a matter of time before the 2019 Open Championship winner achieves another victory and know better way than making it a second major title.

Scottie Scheffler

Scheffler played in the 2016 US Open at Oakmont and since then he has developed into a dominating figure in golf especially by winning two Masters and the recent PGA Championship.

Scheffler is ranked first in 2025 PGA Tour Scoring Average, Strokes Gained Total, Strokes Gained Approach the Greens and this course will suit all facets of his game.

Bryson DeChambeau

DeChambeau participated in 2016 US Open were he finished tied 15th and arguably has the best chance of a LIV Tour member winning due to been ranked second on standings.

DeChambeau is the form player in a major as his last six starts include four top 10 finishes and his game plan will be similar to 2020 Wing Foot victory.

Jon Rahm

The 2021 US Open champion returned to major form due to a top 10 finish in 2025 PGA Championship.

Rahm is ranked third on LIV Tour standings and this is another opportunity to earn much needed points for 2025 Ryder Cup.

Ludvig Aberg

Aberg finished seventh in The Masters and restored confidence due to a closing 66 at Memorial followed by a top 15 finish in RBC Canadian Open.

Aberg entered the weekend 12 months ago as halfway leader in Pinehurst where he went on to finish tied 12th and will be aiming for an improved performance.

Joaquin Niemann

Niemann is the king when it comes to winning LIV Tour events as he has achieved four victories in 2025.

Niemann is coming into Oakmont off his best major finish which is a tied eighth at Quail Hollow.

Hopefully it’s a weekend were McIlroy & Lowry are in contention but it has the makings to be an incredible battle between Scheffler and DeChambeau.
