Ireland’s Seamus Power is in medal contention after a stunning second round

Robert Redmond

Ireland’s medal Olympic medal campaign is up and running.

After a difficult week that saw team Ireland lose four of their eight strong boxing team, Gary and Paul O’Donovan started the second week of the Games in style, winning silver in the men’s lightweight double-sculls final.

While the Cork brothers were winning Ireland’s first medals of the Rio Games, and Ireland’s first ever Olympic rowing medals, Seamus Power was blitzing the field in the men’s golf tournament.

The 29-year-old from Waterford was in fifth place going into the final two holes, after landing an eagle on 16, but a bogey on 17 saw him drop back to a tie for seventh place.

Power hit par on the final hole, finishing his round on 67 and leaving himself in a tie for sixth place, just three shots off Thomas Pieters, who is currently in third place.

Henrik Stenson is currently -8, two off Marcus Fraser, the overnight leader, with two holes to play in Friday’s round.

Padraig Harrington hasn’t been as lucky, and is currently +1 overall.

However, if Power maintains  his form tomorrow and Sunday, Ireland could be very much in contention for another medal at the Games.
