Golfer nails hole-in-one, pays off fan’s mortgage for a year

Roger Sloan jammed his six-iron approach straight into that whitewashed sinkhole at Sanderson Farms

Canadian golf’s answer to Matthew McConaughey sunk a hole-in-one beauty in Mississippi and got a lucky fan off paying his mortgage for a year.

Roger Sloan arrowed in a 180-yard six iron approach on the fourth hole at the Sanderson Farms Championship and high-fived everyone in a 20-yard radius. The Canuck was not the only one celebrating. PGA Tour sponsors Quicken Loans honoured their promise to award one year’s worth of mortgage payments to a sweepstakes winner if any golfer got down in one. Walter Malkowski from Westland, Michigan can sink his money into a speed boat restoration project, or some other worthwhile endeavour, for the next 12 months.

Despite Sloan’s ace, he could only cobble together a round of two-over. Ireland’s three-time Major winner Padraig Harrington is faring better. The Stackstown golfer is two-under for his opening round. His card could have read nicer if he had managed to dispatch a handful of birdie putts from the eight to 10-foot range.

Harrington, however, did drain a 37ft putt on the sixth hole.

Denmark’s Sebastian Cappelen leads the way at seven-under while SportJOE’s favourite American golfer, Dicky Pride, is back on three-over.
