Corofin release inner Barcelona with ultimate team goal

Niall McIntyre

Pick that one out.

The bookies expected a tight All-Ireland club football final with both Corofin and Nemo Rangers priced at even money before throw-in.

Both sides have had similar journeys and have come through similar battles to get to this stage. Nemo Rangers displayed character and steel to topple Slaughtneil in the semi-final. Likewise, Corofin overcame adversity to defeat Leinster champions Moorefield in their last four clash.

Two experienced clubs, two serious outfits. All commentators felt this one would go down to the wire. Kevin O’Brien’s men, however, had different ideas and they made these known from the minute David Gough blew his whistle for the first time.

Revelling in the wide open spaces of Croke Park, Corofin’s forward line made hay as the sun shone on GAA HQ. Daithí Burke and Ronan Steede were bossing it in midfield for the Connacht champions and their energy and willingness set the platform for the rest of the team to prosper.

With Kieran Molloy and Dylan Wall bombing forward down either flank, Nemo Rangers had no answer for their all out attack. Corofin made use of the space at their disposal, their midfielders and half forwards exploited this with some excellent, inviting pass for their inside forwards.

Ian Burke, Martin and Michael Farragher in the full forward line went to town.

Gary Sice scored a cracking left footer to set the tone for them. From there, things only got better.

With Micheal Lundy pulling the strings from centre forward, Corofin were passing the ball around at will, cutting holes and making gaps in Larry Kavanagh’s side’s defence.

Their full forward line took advantage of it all.

Their second goal, finished by Michael Farragher was a work of art.

They went in at half time leading by 2-9 to 0-5.
