Hey Marty, did you hear I’m on my way to single-handedly saving Cork hurling?

Some pundits talk the talk, others walk the walk.

The Sunday Game has some windy characters who like to tell intercounty managers how to do their job, but others – like Kevin McStay – have proved over the years that they have the practical know-how.

Former Cork goalkeeper Donal Óg Cusack has won over viewers in the last two years with his incisive, technical analysis and it seems he has also been putting his knowledge to practical use.

Last night his St Colman’s minor hurlers won their first Cork Premier 2 title with a 1-15 to 0-17 win over Charleville.

Speaking to the Evening Echo following their dramatic, last-gasp, one-point win, the three-time All-Ireland winner praised his young charges.

“Delighted, just proud out of the lads, delighted to be involved with them over the season. We had a great time, great bunch of lads with great commitment,” said Cusack.

“I know every manager would say that after a win, but they really are a good solid bunch and a pleasure to coach and it was great to have that winning feeling tonight at the end,” he added.

Cork are currently hunting for Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s successor as senior hurling manager and, while the vacancy may have come to early this time, Cusack is showing an aptitude that could eventually see him swap the punditry couch for role of intercounty coach.
