Former Clare stalwart, Michael O’Shea passes away after battle with cancer

Michael Corry

There is sad news coming out of Clare this morning after it was announced that former senior footballer Michael O’Shea has died following a battle with cancer.

Michael was 37 year old.

The news was announced via his club, St Senan’s Kilkee earlier today.

In a statement the club said:

O’Shea is widely regarded as a legend of Clare football having lined out for the senior side for 15 season, between 1999-2014.

O’Shea played corner-forward on the Clare team that reached the Munster final in 2012 where they were beaten by a strong Cork side. O’Shea was the Banner county’s top scorer on the day with 0-4.

In his final season with the squad he helped Clare secure promotion out of Division Four of the national league. An amazing feat considering that last season Clare narrowly missed out on promotion to Division One.

O’Shea collected two club senior championships in 2003 & 2005 respectively. On both occasions, he guided them to Munster club final appearances where they lost out to Kerry’s An Ghaeltacht and Cork’s Nemo Rangers.

Following his retirement, O’Shea took up the reigns with Clare U21 footballers, as well as guiding local club Kilmihil to an intermediate championship success last year.

O’Shea was a member of An Garda Síochána and is survived by his wife Orlaith and daughter Éirinn.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, club and all associated with Clare football.
