There were a lot of complaints over the report

You wouldn’t call them Londonderry City FC, so why rename Derry GAA as Londonderry?

A BBC radio GAA round-up caused a stir among Derry GAA supporters on Sunday.

After giving an update on Rory McIlroy, Eve Rosato on Radio Ulster ran through the Alliance National League results. They reported losses for “Tyrone, Donegal, Monaghan and Londonderry”.

The BBC usually alternate between Derry and Londonderry when referring to the city, but in this case, the got the team name wrong. They’re not called Londonderry GAA. The slew of complaints they received over the report was inevitable.

The BBC were quick to address the error, according to the Irish News. A spokesperson from Derry GAA told the site that they were issued an apology over the comments after filing their complaint.

“We were made aware of the BBC broadcast on Sunday evening.”

“We raised our concerns with senior management in the BBC on Monday morning. We have since received both an apology and assurances that it will not happen again.”

The report goes onto say that a BBC spokesperson confirmed that the ‘Londonderry’ reference was an error rather than a change in policy.
