Richie Towell won’t be going up to the Premier League with Brighton and Hove Albion

Not how he would have wanted it to turn out

Brighton and Hove Albion will be playing Premier League football in the 2017/18 season, but Richie Towell won’t be joining them.

The Seagulls qualified for the English top flight by finishing in second place in the Championship. They were just pipped to first by Newcastle United on the final game of the season. Agonisingly, it was a last-minute equaliser from Jack Grealish that sealed their fate as runners-up.

Up until the 89th minute of the game, Brighton were heading towards lifting that trophy. They will still enjoy promotion without the hassle of going through the play-offs, but Grealish (or rather their goalkeeper) deprived them of way greater celebrations at the full time whistle.

Unfortunately for former Dundalk striker Richie Towell, he isn’t in Brighton’s plans for the next campaign.

This isn’t really surprising considering he has struggled to break into the team. Towell has only managed a few games in the FA Cup and has yet to make a league start for the club since joining from the Airtricity league 18 months ago.

Chris Hughton confirmed to the Argus what everyone was already expecting, he’s going to ship off Towell on loan to a Championship club next season.

“Players like Rohan and Richie will go out on loan. We have been really delighted with Richie but we are very keen for him to get out on loan to the Championship next season.”

It’s not how he wanted his time with the club to turn out, but this presents a new opportunity for the Irishman. He will have a fresh start and a chance to break into a new team and hopefully break into the first team. He just hasn’t got much of a chance to shine at Brighton so far.
