Brutal.

For a good chunk of Sunday afternoon, it seemed Liverpool might defy the odds on the final day of the season. Mo Salah even thought he had put Liverpool on the brink of another title.

Manchester City needed a win at home to Aston Villa to be absolutely certain of clinching their fourth Premier League crown in five years. However, with 20 minutes still to play, Pep Guardiola’s side found themselves two goals down and in serious danger of blowing it.

Had that result stayed the same, a win for Liverpool at home to Wolves would have seen them leapfrog City at the top of the table.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were also making hard work of things. Having fallen behind to a Pedro Neto goal inside the first few minutes, Sadio Mane drew them level before half-time.

Despite plenty of pressure, a second goal only came in the final ten minutes, courtesy of Mo Salah.

By then, the news that City had staged a dramatic late comeback to lead 3-2 at the Etihad had filtered through to most inside Anfield – but perhaps not all of the Liverpool players…

As they celebrated Salah’s goal at the edge of the pitch, Joel Matip can be seen asking supporters for the score at The Etihad.

As the camera angle changes, at least two supporters can be seen holding up their fingers to indicate the score in Manchester.

Seconds later, as the game restarted following Salah’s goal, some inside Liverpool appeared to mistakenly believe Villa had scored an equaliser against City which, for the first time in the afternoon, would have put them top of the table as things stood.

This was not the case. Despite Liverpool adding a third in the closing minutes, City saw out the final minutes to retain their crown.
