Luton Town secured a vital three points in their push for promotion to the Premier League with one of the funniest goals you will see all season, on Saturday afternoon.

Taking on strugglers Reading, Luton were seeking a win to stay in the play-off spots and achieved that feat with some help from Middlesbrough, who suffered a 4-1 defeat to Preston North End.

The score was tied at 0-0 on the stroke of half-time, when Reading goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland gifted Luton striker Harry Cornick a golden opportunity.

With a goalkeeping gaffe reminiscent of Andy Marriott’s mistake for Birmingham against Tottenham in the early noughties, Nyland rolled the ball out unaware of Cornick’s presence behind him.

Cornick pounced, took possession of the loose ball and expertly slotted it home past a hapless Nyland to put the home side in front. The poor goalkeeper was crestfallen and needed some of his teammates to get his head back in the game.

Luton make the playoffs

The goal took everyone by surprise, including the TV directors at Sky who understandably missed the moment of hilarity while showing a different action replay.

Six minutes of added time made Luton fans wait for confirmation of their place in the Championship play-offs, with the Hatters now one step closer to their first ever promotion to the Premier League.

Fulham, who lost their final league game 4-0 to Sheffield United, and Bournemouth – who secured automatic promotion with a win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday – took the automatic promotion spots this season.

Joining sixth placed Luton in the play-offs will be Forest, Huddersfield, and Sheffield United.
