Loris Karius fails to deal with deflected cross as Malmo beat Besiktas

Should he have done better?

Loris Karius didn’t need that.

Karius looked well on his way to recapturing his confidence, which was the ultimate goal behind Liverpool’s decision to send their under-fire goalkeeper out on a two-year loan to Besiktas.

Liverpool fans eager to keep up with how Karius has been getting on in Turkey would have been treated to some impressive showings from the stopper as he has shown what he is capable of with several important saves for his new side since his move.

There has been the odd speedbump, as is to be expected from all goalkeepers but, for the most part, Besiktas would have been pleased with his performances.

But the error-prone side of the German ‘keeper showed itself on Thursday night, when Besiktas fell to a 2-0 defeat at Malmo in the Europa League.

The 25-year-old misjudged the flight of the ball when a cross from the right deflected off Caner Erkin and deceived Karius.

It seemed like Karius was attempting to tip the dropping ball over the bar but it instead fell into the back of his net.

Karius could do nothing with the penalty which gave Malmo the requisite breathing room and the Swedish champions claimed a 2-0 win, their first of Group I.
