Jamie Carragher has hit back at Richard Keys after the BeIN Sports presenter accused Carragher of being “borderline racist.”

Following England’s World Cup quarter-final exit to France, reports have begun to emerge suggesting that Gareth Southgate may be considering his position as the Three Lions’ boss.

With that in mind, debate has sprung about who would be the suitable candidate to take over. Reports suggest that Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel could be the early frontrunners if the job became available.

Carragher however shares the mind of many others in that the manager should be of English descent. “The England manager should always be English!”

That didn’t sit well with Keys however who responded and said that the Sky Sports pundit’s claims were on the verge of being racist.

“What sort of nonsense is this? It borders on racism,” he replied.

“The England coach should be the best person available. England should not hide behind closed borders & minds.”

Once again, Carragher responded and questioned if Keys’ claims were because he worked for Sky Sports. Keys left his role at the broadcaster in 2011 after making sexist remarks about female referee Sian Massey-Ellis.

“‘It borders on racism’. I hope you send similar tweets to a lot of journalists who have the same opinion, or is it because I work for Sky!

“You are a sad desperate man.”

Others meanwhile have pointed out that the last two pieces of silverware won by England coaches were not born English.

Sarina Wiegman, born in the Netherlands, guided the Lionesses to a famous Euro 2022 victory this summer while Welsh-born Steve Cooper was in charge of England Under-17’s World Cup triumph in 2017.
