Former Rangers striker Boyd comes back to haunt them

Niall McIntyre

34 years young.

Kris Boyd was once a hero at Ibrox. On Saturday the ‘Gers faithful will have been cursing their former attacker.

The Kilmarnock front man turned in a vintage Kris Boyd performance in Rugby Park, notching two rather opportunistic goals to make it three home wins on the bounce for Steve Clarke’s side.

Indeed, it was a big day for Rangers given that it was Graeme Murty’s first day in charge since he was appointed as their permanent manager, but it all ended in disappointment.

Boyd had a huge part to play in that, scoring twice within just one minute of play. Declan John had given the away side the lead, when he netted in the 39th minute.

His first goal levelled the scores after 78 minutes of the action, when Scottish winger did well to make space for himself down the flank, before whipping in an inviting ball for Boyd to attack.

Attack he did, and he finished well past Wes Foderingham.

That first goal lifted the home crowd, and gave the Killie players a noticeable confidence boost. Eventually, this swing in momentum paid off when Boyd reacted quickest to a wayward Mulumbu shot to poke it home again.

That’s what Boyd does, he’s a goalscorer, as Rangers fans are well aware, and he now becomes Kilmarnock’s joint second ever highest scorer, with this his second spell at the club.

There were two Irish players representing Kilmarnock, namely Gary Dicker and Alan Power, with both faring well alongside Mulumbu in midfield.

The loss put a stop Rangers’ hopes of passing out Aberdeen and moving into second, while it moved Kilmarnock into the top six. Rival fans certainly revelled in Rangers’ latest slip-up:
