The Football Association are considering putting forward a bid for England to host the 2030 World Cup. The last time England hosted the tournament was back in 1966, when they were crowned world champions at Wembley.

FA chairman Greg Clarke has confirmed that the UK’s governing body of football is starting work to see if a bid is feasible.

“This work will take place during the new season and no decision will be made until 2019,” he said.

The FA has already bid to host the Women’s European Championships in 2021.

Wembley will be host to seven matches during Euro 2020, so England will be well prepared in hosting large crowds in the capital.

In 2010, England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup, headed by David Beckham, David Cameron and Prince William, failed as Russia secured the rights to host the tournament.

That decision angered the FA, who felt aggreived by the voting process, but it is thought that the greater transparency around the decision to award Mexico, Canada and the United States the 2026 World Cup has encouraged them to go back in with another bid.

However, it is expected that Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay will launch a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup to mark 100 years since Uruguay hosted the first ever World Cup.
