Rio 2016: Here is the full list of Irish in action at the Rio Games today

Ben Kiely

It’s another big day in Rio and here’s your guide to the Irish involvement.

1.10pm: Rowing – Single sculls quarter final (Sanita Puspure)

The Cork/Latvian rower wasn’t fazed by the atrocious weather conditions on Saturday and breezed through to the quarter final stage by finishing second in her heat.

2.00pm: Equestrian – Team eventing (show-jumping/final)

Clare Abbot, Jonty Evans, Mark Kyle, Padraig McCarthy will all jump for the team position, with the top 25 riders overall then slugging it out for the individual prize. Kyle is the cream of the Irish crop in 16th.

After finishing fifth in the dressage, they had a little setback after the cross country course due to McCarthy’s fall.
4.00pm: Men’s Hockey – Ireland v Germany (Group B)
Following their brave defeat to India in their opener on Saturday, the Boys in Green suffered a chastening defeat to the Dutch on Sunday. On Tuesday afternoon they’re again up against it facing a German side currently ranked No 3 in the world.
5.05pm: Sailing – Women’s laser radial (preliminaries – race 3) – Annalise Murphy

The Dubliner got off to an absolute flyer on day one, cruising to win her first race before a 14th place finish in the second saw her end up fourth in the overall rankings. However, reigning Olympic gold medalist Lijia Xu’s disqualification from the second race saw her bumped up to third spot after day one.

5.08pm: Swimming – Men’s 100m freestyle – heat 3 – Shane Ryan

The American-born swimmer got a new personal best in the 100m backstroke heat before bowing out in the semi-final stage. He’s back in the pool again for the freestyle heats today.

5.15pm: Sailing – Laser (dinghy) (preliminaries – race 3) – Finn Lynch

At the ripe young age of 20, Lynch is one to look out for in the future. He finished 14th and 28th in his opening two races and lies in 21st going into the second day.

5.55pm: Swimming – Men’s 200m breaststroke (heat 2) – Nicholas Quinn

The Castlebar man finished ina very respectable fourth place in his 100m breastroke heat three days ago. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough to see him qualify for the next round, but he’ll get to show why he prefers it over 200m today.

6.30pm: Sailing – Women’s laser radial (dinghy) (preliminaries -race 4) – Annalise Murphy

Still a long way to go for Murphy, but she will be closing in on the half-way point of the event today with the medals race scheduled for next Monday.
6.40pm: Sailing – Laser (dinghy) (preliminaries – race 4) – Finn Lynch

No rest for Lynch as he’s pretty much straight back into it after his first race of the day.
9.00pm: Boxing (Men’s light – 60kg) David Oliver Joyce v Albert Selimov (Aze)

After Paddy Barnes was knocked out on Monday, the Irish boxing team is in need of a pick-me-up. They’ll be hoping that Joyce will provide this boost by beating No 2 seed Albert Selimov. Joyce reached this stage by defeating Andrique Allisop in the opening round.

2.03am: Swimming – Men’s 100m freestyle – semi-final – Shane Ryan (possible)

If he’s one of the 16 fastest times of the preliminaries, he’ll make it to the semis.
3.03am: Swimming – Men’s 200m breaststroke (semi-final) – Nicholas Quinn (possible)

Again, he’ll need a strong performance in his heat to make it to this stage.

BEST OF THE REST

Gymnastics

The women’s all-round team final kicks off at 20:00 Irish time with USA poised to reclaim the gold medals they claimed in London four years ago. The event will see the world’s top eight nations competing across four disciplines – the balance beam, the floor, the uneven bars and the vault.

France v Australia in Rugby sevens

The women’s competition proved to be a real hit in Rio and now we turn towards the men. The highlight of the day may be the clash between two rugby strongholds in France and Australia, which kicks off at 15:00 Irish time.

Women’s RS:X (windsurfer)

Aside from cheering on your nation’s athletes, one of the great things about the Olympics is getting to check out a sport you may have never seen before. The windsurfing preliminaries kicks off at 17:20 today. Have a gawk and who knows, you may get hooked.
