Katie Taylor knows when she wants to fight for a world title

She's well on course

Katie Taylor’s latest professional boxing win was her most impressive yet since her November 2016 debut. She is not ready for a world title shot yet but she is not far away.

Taylor picked former world title challenger Milena Koleva apart in Manchester, last night, to win her eight round fight in comfortable fashion.

Taylor had her opponent on the canvas midway through a one-sided contest and coasted home as unanimous winner on points.

The Bray boxer’s latest victory in the pro ranks even won the boisterous approval of popular Liverpudlian heavyweight Tony Bellew, who was watching ringside.

Not long after Taylor had her arm raised in victory, she spoke to Sky Sports about her plans to target the lightweight world title. She said:

“I definitely needed the eight rounds. I’m trying to progress fast. A good ten-rounder I hope is next. That was a great, great contest for me against a very strong opponent.”

“It was a great, great fight for me. All credit to [Koleva]. She gave it everything she had.”

Taylor continued: “It’s probably up to Eddie [Hearn, my promoter] I think. Two or three fights and I’d hope to be challenging for a world title. I definitely feel ready now.”

The 30-year-old is expected to be named on the undercard to the World Heavyweight Title bout between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium on April 29.

Another convincing victory late next month and she could well be fighting for a world title come summer.
