Twenty-five year old charged after incident in Mullingar this week
John Joe Nevin appeared in court in Mullingar District Court on Friday in connection with a fight outside a bar in the town earlier this week.
The boxer was in court along with five members of his extended family after the incident on Monday night.
The 25-year old, of St Anthony’s Cottages, was charged with being drunk in a public place and with threatening and abusive behaviour.
The boxer was remanded on bail by judge Seamus Hughes under various conditions, but these may be temporarily lifted to allow Nevin train abroad. The court was told that as many as 25 people were involved in a brawl outside the Stillery pub on Monday night and five people were arrested. Gardai told the court that there may be more arrests as the investigation proceeds.
Nevin was not present on Friday morning when the case was initially called before the judge, with the explanation given for his absence that he couldn’t be there until 2pm because he was “down the country”.
He did appear in the afternoon. He was remanded on €100 bail and he was also banned from entering any licensed premises in Westmeath, including supermarket off-licenses, until the case comes back before the court on May 21st.
He is also to remain drug and alcohol free, not to be found in possession of intoxicating liquor and he is also under a curfew from 11pm until 8am.
