Irish boxer fires back at Conor McGregor after his poem backfires

Undefeated super featherweight Jono Carroll [16-0] has fired back at Conor McGregor after the former UFC Lightweight champion said that Declan Geraghty ‘would have too much for him’ in their Belfast rematch last month.

Carroll and Geragthy fought in November 2014 with the former winning on a disqualification call. Carroll has since won the IBF European Super Featherweight title and the IBF Inter-Continental Super Featherweight Title as he continues to develop in his blossoming professional career.

McGregor, who trained with Geraghty in the lead up to his 2016 rematch with Nate Diaz, said that the Crumlin native would have too much for Carroll in the rematch.

Geragthy told IFL TV that McGregor had sent him a poem ahead of the fight to reassure him in his own abilities.

“Do your thing brother, do it emotionless, do it smooth like butter,” the text reportedly read.

“You got the butter smooth work in you and you can bang in there when needed. Bang when it presents itself,”

“Stay tight in defence wait for these moments and then just yourself ,everything else will come embrace it and just behave, be snappy and full of confidence,”

“You’ve too much for him.”

Carroll won the rematch with a 9th round TKO and took to his Twitter account to respond to McGregor’s pre-fight prediction.

McGregor’s future in combat sports is somewhat uncertain given his scheduled court date at Kings County Criminal Court in Brooklyn later this month to face charges of assault and criminal mischief after a bus attack at the UFC 223 media day.

UFC President Dana White admits that all both the UFC and McGregor have been in contact with each other prior to the bus incident at UFC 223  media day. However, he claims that the actual ‘talks’ haven’t started yet.

“No, we’re not (in talks with Conor McGregor). But we have been talking. We’ve been talking since before the incident happened,” White told  Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports.

“It’s funny because that’s one of the things I said too. I said, ‘Listen, after Conor makes this money with Floyd, he may never fight again.’ And he hasn’t. He hasn’t fought since that fight. I know he wants to. I know Conor is anxious to fight. And, you know, we’ve got to get through this thing in July.”

“But no, no talks are going on right now.”
