Watch: Ireland’s Scott Evans makes history, celebrates wildly and gets booed by the Rio crowd

Brilliant...

Scott Evans had already made history this week.

The Dubliner beat German Marc Zwiebler on Friday, and became the first Irish badminton player to win at the Olympic Games.

That victory left him in prime position to advance from Group K, but Brazilian Ygor Coelho De Oliveira, and a hostile home crowd, stood in his way on Saturday evening in Rio.

The crowds haven’t flocked to the venues at the Rio Olympics, but the badminton hall was packed for Evans’ tie against the favoured hometown player.

The 28-year-old from Dublin took the first game 21-8, but Oliveira fought back, cheered-on by the buyout Rio crowd, winning the second game 21-19.

However, Evans took control in the decisive game, winning 21-8, securing his place in the last-16 on Monday and becoming the first Irishman to reach that stage of the Olympic competition.

A brilliant, historical achievement, but Evans wasn’t done yet.

He also produced a memorable celebration, which didn’t go down well with the Rio crowd.

Scott, who had been booed throughout, didn’t care one bit though…
