A huge crash marred the conclusion to yesterday's second stage of the Giro d'Italia, and video has emerged showing the spill was caused by a spectator riding their bicycle into the middle of the peloton.
The crash could have serious implications for the race, with possible podium contender Domenico Pozzovivo losing more than a minute to his rivals. Etixx-QuickStep rider Pieter Serry was forced to abandon the race while a host of other riders were left with painful cuts and bruises.
The fan footage clearly shows a cyclist joining the peloton from the pavement at the far left of the screen.

Eugenio Alafaci of Trek Factory Racing was among those caught up in the incident and tweeted his anger after the stage, which was won by Sky sprinter Elia Viviani.

The tweet reads: "If I get hold of the dickhead that had the brilliant idea of diving into the peloton on a fixed bike with 10km to go, causing us to crash…"
Alafaci followed up with a further post on Facebook which read: "He also caused (Marco) Coledan to crash too. I think he’d get a lot of punches from Cole… You’re just an idiot!!! Unfortunately there are also imbeciles… Fortunately at Trek we’re not hurt even if Marco has lost a lost of skin… It’s better if we turn the page."
