It looks like Pistorius will be out of the slammer before the end of August.

The former Paralympic champion was handed a five-year sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, after shooting her multiple times through the closed bathroom door of their Pretoria house.

However, Pistorius will be freed from prison on parole by the end of August, according to his family, after a authorities recommended that he serve the minimum jail time.

The former sprinter will again face a possible murder conviction in November, when prosecutors appeal the original decision from last year’s trial.

However, Pistorius will have been out of jail and placed under house arrest for three months by that stage.

An unnamed member of the Pistorius family told Reuters that Oscar would be granted “correctional supervision” once he had served a sixth of his prison sentence on 21st August.

“Oscar will be released on parole by the end of August,” the family member said.

If the initial decision is overturned at the new hearing, Pistorius will be staring down the barrel of a minimum 15-year jail sentence.
