There was uproar over the lack of Irish TV coverage for Nicholas Quinn’s heat victory in Rio

"Absolute disgrace"

Ben Kiely

Nicholas Quinn swam a phenomenal race to win heat two of the 200m breastroke in Rio on Tuesday.

Quinn defeated all the other competitors in the pool with a time of 2:11.67 over his preferred 200m, but unfortunately he failed to qualify for the semi-finals by the narrowest of margins.

The top 16 fastest swimmers across all heats progressed to the semis and the 23-year-old was lying in 16th going into the final heat. However, a lightning fast final heat saw him drop to 19th. Quinn missed out on qualification by 0.41 of a second.

While Quinn undoubtedly did the country proud with his phenomenal race, a lot of his compatriots didn’t actually get a chance to see it because RTE were showing live coverage of the hockey match between Ireland and Germany.

BBC were showing the swimming, but some fans were very disappointed that our national broadcaster didn’t show Quinn in action.

RTE eventually showed the race, but nearly an hour after it had finished.
