Place Your Bets: NFL Week 11

Bad teams can make you money too

Gareth Makim

SportsJOE has been counting the cash after three of last week’s tips came through, but we’ve finished just in time to take a look at this week’s line-up of NFL games.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Washington (OVER 45.5 points)

This is match-up of two terrible teams, who have just four wins between them, and this is likely to be a pretty poor game, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take advantage. Washington (3-6) was in a high scoring game last week against Minnesota, quarterback Robert Griffin’s first appearance under centre since going down with an ankle injury in Week 2, and rank sixth in the league in passing yards for the season. With Tampa Bay (1-8) ranked 31st against the pass RG3 could be in for a big day, and the 9/1 available for Washington to score the most points on Sunday is also worth a flutter.

Oakland Raiders @ San Diego Chargers (Raiders +10.5)

Yes, Oakland (0-9) is another terrible team, but although they have yet to win this season, they are a bit better than their record suggests, with a point differential that indicates they probably should have a couple of Ws on the board by now. They also appear to have their quarterback of the future in rookie Derek Carr, who threw four touchdowns against the Chargers (5-4) in Week 6. That, incidentally is San Diego’s last win, and although running back Ryan Mathews is returning, offensive line injuries and the declining play of early season MVP frontrunner Philip Rivers have seen the Chargers score just 41 points in three games.

San Francisco 49ers @ New York Giants (49ers -4)

The 49ers (5-4) got their season back on track with a big win in New Orleans last week, but with so many teams ahead of them in the NFC play-off picture they simply can’t afford to slip up on their trip east. The Giants (3-6) have lost their last four games by an average of 18 points, and although they looked good for two-plus quarters last week in Seattle, they got blown out late on as the Seahawks ground-and-pounded them into submission, a blueprint the Niners should be able to follow. San Francisco got back to their running game in the Bayou and if they commit to tailbacks Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde against the worst rushing defence in the NFL then that should be enough.
