Viewers may get option of all-female Premier League commentary on Amazon
Amazon is looking at offering viewers the option to watch Premier League games with an all-female commentary team.
The online platform has rights to broadcast two full sets of fixtures for three years from next season on and after the popularity of the option of all-female commentary on their coverage of NFL games, Amazon is considering doing the same for Premier League matches.
"As part of the Thursday night football coverage we take the core Fox feed with their own commentary team, but we decided to offer viewers an alternative with an all-female commentary team, Hannah Storm and Andrea Kremer, very well-respected NFL journalists in the US," Amazon’s European managing director, Alex Green, said at the Leaders in Sport conference in London, via the Times.
"That has proved really popular, it has gone down very well and people have really appreciated having the choice. We have also offered a British, Anglicised voice commentary which has proved very popular in the US — maybe they find it quaint."
Starting in the 2019/20 season, Amazon will exclusively stream two rounds of Premier League matches, both of which are expected to be in December.
Green added: "Giving customers that choice is great and being a streaming service we can offer additional overlays and commentary options. That is a great thing for us to explore."
Green would not reveal any names when asked about potential female commentators on Amazon's coverage but insisted that the service has "a lot of resources and we will put a lot of effort into it to deliver great coverage."
