He died aged 27.

One of the best known footballers in Uganda, David Owori, has died aged 27, after a fatal attack by a group of suspected robbers outside of his home in the city of Kampala, as reported by BBC News, and confirmed by the player's club Sports Club (SC) Villa.

Quoting information from local police, the BBC's report details how Owori was "fatally assaulted after resisting an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other belongings."

Witnesses, quoted in reports, are said to have seen a group of attackers strike Owori with paving stones on Tuesday night before robbing the footballer of his belongings.

The group of attackers are then said to have fled, leaving Owori unconscious.

Alongside playing for "The Cranes," Uganda's national team, Owori was best known as the captain of SC Villa, for whom he filled in at right-back and in midfield.

His club have since issued the following statement in response to news of Owori's death.

"We have lost more than a player - we have lost a leader, brother and friend."

The BBC's report also included the following information provided by SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye, regarding the attack on Owori.

"The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility."

Owori was rushed to a nearby medical clinic, and also spent time at a private facility in Kampala, before eventually passing away as a result of his injuries on Wednesday.

While local authorities begin investigations to discover those responsible for the attack, tributes have begun to pour in for David Owori.

The Ugandan Football Federation took to X to write: "The Federation of Uganda Football Associations mourns the untimely passing of Owori David, Captain of SC Villa and Uganda Cranes player.

"David was not just a footballer.

He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation.

"As Captain of SC Villa, he led with courage, humility and passion.

"In the Uganda Cranes jersey, he carried the hopes of a nation.

"On behalf of the FUFA Executive Committee, Delegates, Members, Secretariat Staff and the entire football fraternity, we extend our deepest condolences to SC Villa, his family, teammates, coaches and all Ugandans on the loss of Owori.

"We have lost a son, a leader and a star.

"His light on and off the pitch will never be forgotten.

"We pray that the Almighty grants Owori David eternal rest and gives his family and SC Villa the strength to bear this great loss during these trying times.

"Rest in peace, Captain. Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim."
