“It’s worth nothing if we don’t step on” – Lee Keegan has honest message for Mayo team

"It's only a stepping stone for this squad."

Lee Keegan was probably one of the most relieved men in Croke Park yesterday as Mayo finally beat Dublin for the first time since 2012. Keegan has been a part of those teams who were beat by The Blues, time and time again, coming close but never quite getting there. Although the marauding defender was understandably delighted with the win, he had an important message for his team.

"We knew coming here today against Dublin, probably one of the greatest teams we have ever come across, and playing them over the last 10 or 12 years, we know what we have to come up against. "To have our supporters back here today, really gave us that bit of extra belief in extra time. As I always say, we have three weeks now to dust ourselves down, and get back to the nitty gritty during the week.

"Today is a milestone moment for ourselves, but it's worth nothing if we don't go on now and really step on as a team.

"It's obviously a huge relief to get over the line, 2012 was our last victory against Dublin, so today is a huge moment, but you see the transition of the group that we have. "We have very little of the team that has come from the '17 and '16 final, so unfortunately I'm one of the older statesmen, so I've seen the whole thing come and go in like 10 years.

"We're going to soak it in tonight, get a bit of recovery in the morning, but just for all the Mayo fans here today, it means so much to us, and it's only a stepping stone for this squad."
