Wexford to wear retro jersey for championship opener

100 years ago, Wexford were doing what not even Jim Gavin has managed to do yet.

Between 1915 and 1918, the Model county clinched four All-Ireland senior football titles in succession and made it back to back to back to back. It was a period of dominance that had Gaels all over the country howling for the division of Wexford. The county sinply had to be split, they said. Split it in two at either side of the River Slaney and be done with it. On May 12, Wexford GAA will mark the centenary of that unprecedented football team. On that date, Wexford will host Laois in the Leinster football championship in Innovate Wexford Park and a range of events have been organised including the publication of a special commemorative programme. Better still, the team will take on Laois in the championship opener whilst wearing a replica jersey very similar to that worn by the 1918 outfit. Daithí Waters and Michael Furlong took one for the team by not just modelling the retro jerseys, but sticking on a flat cap too. The geansaí will first be seen in public on Tuesday night, May 1, in the Talbot Hotel in Stillorgan where some of the most famous sons of Wexford - in GAA, in rugby and soccer- will come together for a special championship preview night. Then on May 12, Division 4 champions Laois will be welcomed into town but, if Wexford can summon the spirit of 1918, they'll take some stopping.
