David Clifford is in UL now and judging by his form in the Ryan Cup, it looks like he's ready to rock this year's Sigerson Cup for the Limerick college.
The Ryan Cup is the top-tier League competition in college's football and it was on Monday night when UL hosted DCU for the semi-final. It was a wet, windy evening in Castletroy but in a game that went down to the wire, both teams played their part in a high-scoring affair.
Eventually, reigning Sigerson champions DCU prevailed by the bare minimum after a 2-12 to 3-8 thriller but it was a man on the losing side who stole the show. Having played for IT Tralee at this grade for the last two years, Clifford has made the move up to Limerick and it hasn't taken him long to make an impact with his new college.
The Fossa club-man scored 2-1 from play but it was his second half goal that will stand the test of time. Three DCU defenders converged as soon as Clifford ran onto a hand-pass at the 21 but as he so often does, the Kerryman found a way to make a bit of space for himself. He jinked one way, went the other before setting himself up for a thunderous finish off his supposedly weaker right foot.
It didn't look too weak though when he almost ripped the net off its stanchions with a goal that had the crowd laughing at its brilliance.
