Westmeath championship game abandoned following serious collision

A three-man clash after 44 minutes of the Westmeath IFC game saw the wing back lying face down, before a 12-minute stoppage.

In a sensible call, referee Mickey Dan Murtagh decided to end the game.

According to the Hogan Stand, an ambulance arrived from Naas an hour after being called.

Thankfully, however, the injury was not as serious as first feared, and Rainey was released from hospital that evening, after suffering a concussion and bruised ribs.

On social media, his club wrote: "Best wishes on a speedy recovery to Cian Rainey who picked up a nasty injury in our game vs Kilbeggan Shamrocks last night. Many thanks to all who attended to Cian after the incident.

'The game will be rescheduled with date, venue, and time to be confirmed in the coming days!"
