Mayo teams don’t have the best track record in finals at Croke Park, but there was no stopping Westport as they claimed the All-Ireland intermediate club title with victory over St. Colmcille’s of Meath on Sunday.
They had to survive a gusty comeback by St. Colmcille’s at the death, but Westport held on to claim victory by 2-12 to 3-8 in a thrilling encounter, despite losing Mayo star Kevin Keane to injury in the first half.
Keane watched the closing stages on crutches from the sideline and when the final whistle sounded, he was greeted by his brother Gary in hugely emotional scenes captured by Edwin McGreal of the Mayo News.
Gary nearly knocked Kevin off the crutches amidst all the excitement, but the significance of the victory was clear to see in a beautiful moment that will strike a chord with anyone involved in the GAA throughout the country.

Brilliant stuff.
Cheers to Edwin McGreal and Brian Murphy for sending this our way.
