Two Mayo clubs look finally set to receive J.P. McManus funding

Caiseal Gaels hurling and Ballyvary hurling finally look set to receive their portion of the €100,000 J.P. McManus donated to every Gaelic Games county board in Ireland last month.

McManus' €3.2m donation follows Limerick’s recent All-Ireland Hurling Championship win over Galway with the wealthy businessman serving as a long time sponsor of Limerick GAA. Caiseal claimed last month that their club and Ballyvary were the only two clubs in Mayo to be excluded from the allocation while Ballyvary called on the Mayo county board to reverse their decision regarding the funding split. Dermot Butler, Mayo GAA secretary, confirmed on Friday that both clubs would receive their funding if the other 48 clubs in Mayo were willing to refund €83 that will be deducted from their gate receipts rebate. A Mayo GAA statement read:

"The Steering Committee of  Chairman (Mike Connolly), Secretary (Dermot Butler) and Treasurer (Kevin O'Toole) met with representatives from Ballyvarry Hurling and Caiseal Gaels Hurling on Wednesday 17.10.18 in McHale Park. "Both Units outlined their progress to date and their plans to develop Hurling in their respective areas over the next 5 years. It was pointed out to both Units that they are not fully fledged Clubs but their work in promoting Hurling was to be commended. "As a result of the meeting, the Steering Committee are recommending that Ballyvarry Hurling and Caiseal Gaels Hurling receive an equal share of the donation that Clubs received. This can only be achieved if all 48 Clubs that received the donation agree to pay back €83. This will be deducted from the gate receipt rebate that Clubs will receive at Convention. "If any Club does not wish to return the €83 can they please email me back otherwise it will be taken that all Clubs are in agreement with the recommendation."
