Quotes have emerged from 2013 that show the shocking extent of DJ Carey's hypocrisy after the former hurler was jailed for five-and-a-half years for fraud.
The Kilkenny hurling legend defrauded 22 people after falsely claimed he had cancer.
At his hearing last Friday, the court heard how the outstanding sum for what was obtained by Carey was €349,927 and $13,000, including more than €125,000 from businessman Denis O’Brien.
Dozens of stories and witness statements were told during the case, but quotes that have been dug up from over a decade ago show the ironic and hypocritical thinking of Carey.
In his 2013 autobiography, Carey named an entire chapter “A rumour a day keeps the truth away," and went on to say in that chapter: "The trouble is that one untrue story can fan out and multiply."
In promoting the book, Carey also ironically stated: “I wouldn’t be a person who would go out and say, ‘Can you help me?’ It’s not in my nature to do that.”

These quotes now look damning and almost satirical in nature.
Five-time All-Ireland champion Carey is regarded as one of the most successful and celebrated players in hurling history.
He was honoured as Hurler of the Year in 2000 and earned nine All-Star awards over the course of his career.
