One of Ireland’s best sports journalists penned a great tribute to local GAA commentators

This is the best thing about the GAA. Not the scores, not the atmosphere, not the craic around  a big game. It is all about the local commentators. GAA writer Malachy Clerkin profiled some of Ireland's most eccentric and colourful broadcasters in today's Irish Times and it will make you laugh out loud, or LOL, even. Clerkin talks about a host of commentators but the stars of the show are definitely Kerry's Weeshie Fogarty and Wexford's Liam Spratt. Nobody can match Fogarty's passion for Kerry football, although his knowledge of contemporary music could probably be a little stronger. https://soundcloud.com/secondcaptains/weeshie And Spratt has developed such an arsenal of memorable quotes that there is a Facebook page devoted to him.     [caption id="attachment_29347" align="aligncenter" width="565"]spratt Picture from yellowbelly.ie[/caption] Ger Canning and Marty Morrissey are great at what they do on RTÉ but there is definitely something to be said for listening to the native commentators passionately, and hilariously, keep track of their own teams.
