Andy Moran’s side cruised to an emphatic 2-30 to 2-11 victory over Monaghan in St Tiernach’s Park, Clones, but one of the biggest talking points came late in the second half when the recently signed St Kilda prospect made his first competitive senior appearance.

McDonald, who lit up the minor championship with a string of eye-catching performances, entered the action from the bench and wasted little time showing his quality. The forward struck an impressive 1-4 during his cameo, including a superbly taken goal that highlighted both his pace and finishing ability. He also clipped over a classy two-pointer, drawing plenty of attention from the travelling support.

With his AFL move already confirmed, there has been huge hype around the Mayo youngster, and his brief appearance only added to the sense that he could have offered something special had he remained longer in the county game.
