GAA stars slam letter looking to oust Armagh manager Kieran McGeeney

GAA players of the past and present against a letter calling for Armagh manager Kieran McGeeny to resign from his role with the Orchard county.

Armagh were narrowly beaten by Mayo in the third round of All-Ireland qualifiers last weekend with Mayo just edging McGeeney's side 2-13 to 1-15. The All-Ireland winner said that it was too early to make a decision on his coaching future with the county while a former player wrote an anonymous letter to the Irish News calling for his dismissal. In the letter, the former player, who remains anonymous, said that his loyalty to those in the current Armagh setup had become a fault, that he failed to change his tactics when Mayo were on the ropes and that he felt that he did not have his absolute focus on the senior team. McGeeney told RTE after the Mayo loss that his team deserved more than what they received last weekend and that very few people like you as a manager.

"It’s probably a wee bit early yet," he said. "I couldn’t be any prouder of the players, it’s just a pity they didn’t get more out of it today, they deserved a wee bit more from that today but that’s the way it goes. "One thing about management is that when you start, very few like you. By the time you finish they all don’t like you, so it’s a tough station."
