All minor and U20 inter-county games are off

Another badly kept secret has been confirmed.

It was expected that, under Level 5 restrictions, all non-professional sport would be in jeopardy of continuing and the GAA have finally been granted clarification. Only senior inter-county games will be allowed to continue for the next six weeks as the country braces itself for a second lockdown. Mícheál Martin said on Monday night that elite sport could still continue but there was confusion as to what constituted elite and what didn't. In a statement on Wednesday afternoon, the GAA confirmed all minor and u20 inter-county games would be paused until further notice meaning a stop to the championships and a postponement of the U20 All-Ireland final between Dublin and Galway which was due to take place this weekend. The restrictions won't come in until midnight on Wednesday however so the opening round of the Leinster U20 hurling championship where Antrim play Dublin, Laois take on Carlow and Westmeath travel to Offaly will all go ahead. The statement reads:

'Following clarification from the Department of Sport around the staging of inter-county fixtures, the GAA can confirm that as of midnight this evening, all minor and U20 inter-county competitions are paused until further notice.  'Accordingly, Saturday’s scheduled EirGrid GAA U20 football final meeting of Dublin and Galway will not take place.  'This evening’s Bord Gáis Energy Leinster U20 hurling fixtures will proceed.  'Additionally, the GAA's CCCC has been informed that Longford will not be fulfilling their Allianz Football League fixture with Cork this weekend.'
